The St Cuthberts Way goes between Melrose, the location of St Cuthbert's early monastic life*, to Lindisfarne (Holy Island), the area of St Cuthbert's later ministry and death.

This walk is interesting, varied and links with the Southern Upland Way, the Sir Walter Scott Way, the Borders Abbeys Way and the Roman Heritage Way at Melrose, the Pennine Way at Kirk Yetholm and the St Oswald's Way at Lindisfarne.

Location map

The map helps to identify the line and location of the Way, running west to east and crossing the Border between the Scottish Borders and Northumberland in Northern England.
Although the majority of walkers travel from west to east it can be as easily walked in the reverse direction with good waymarking in both directions.
A much more detailed map of the route is provided on the Route Data section of the site along with section by section descriptions.

* St Cuthbert's early monastic life was at Old Melrose, approximately 4 Km to the east of Melrose and the western starting point of the Way. The Christian community in Old Melrose was in existance in the 7th century, the Cistercian Abbey of Melrose was not built until the 12th century.
